I would like to start an office cleaning service in my area. I am close to retirement, out of work and would like to be my own boss. I thought a office cleaning service would be ideal. I understand that I will need a bonded insurance to cover any theft by employees. My question is, how do I get started? The community I live in is about 30,000 people with many offices and factories around. What books do I need to read to get some ideas?

  2. Hi! Henry gave you some good answers. I clean small offices, and it is a great business to be in. as Henry said, small offices need cleaning, no matter what the economy is. It is important you have your ducks in a row before you begin getting customers. Yes, be sure to get liability insurance, or a bond. Call as many insurance agencies as you can and get quotes for the amount you want to start with. The rates vary a lot, so call around. Once you select an agency, make friend with them-they can be great for leads to new business.
    Check with your local city or county clerk’s office to see if you need a permit of license. Most will tell you you need a fictitious name, but usually that is not required. It mostly is needed to open a business bank account and so the local government can tax you. So wait if you can.
    Write down all the reasons you are better than your competitors. This list will be used to build your flier that Henry gave you tips on using. Begin by stopping by offices and chatting with the office managers. Find out if they are happy with how their offices are being cleaned, what they would like to have done that is not. Ask them if they would be open to you submitting a bid. Also, when you see new office complexes being build, buy a box of donuts and stop by.
