Unhappy with Directtv service?

Hey guys,

Real quick background about me/my situation. I’m 20 year old, moved into my first apartment, was advised by neighbors to go with DIRECTTV. I fell into the holiday trap of "150 channels including STARZ and SHOTIME for $29.99! no hidden fees, no extra charges! " So, jumping at the chance for a good deal, I contacted the sales person who told me that "if I was unhappy with my service, I could call and terminate within 30 days"- this is what really sold me, the ability to have a trial period. On the 28th day, I called to cancel, and the representative told me that DTV does not that have a trial period and it doesn’t say so in the terms/conditions. I reread their terms and lo and behold, she’s right! Case closed.

A month later, my second bill arrives with a $5.99 insurance fee that I did not consent to. I called to cancel that and they told me that they credit that insurance fee the first 30 days, but that it is a year long subscription that is tacked onto the bill. In order to cancel, I have to pay $10, but I should be advised that if a technician were to come out, or any equipment would need to be replaced, I have to pay $50+ just for the tech to come out. I didn’t consent for the insurance plan, but at the same time, I’m fearful for what may happen if I cancel it and will need a tech.

My dad raised me to ask all the right questions before I sign the contract, and I’m positive that I did, otherwise I wouldn’t have signed. Questions about early termination, free tech help, problems with service, etc. After reading this article, I had some questions for you.

It’s only been a month since I’ve started service with them and I’m already extremely unhappy. I’ve spoken to 2 "supervisors" who have been no help at all. I feel inexperienced and upset because I obviously want to get the deal I signed for.

What can I do? (Should I just pay the $5.99 a month to prevent a $50 charge in case a tech has to come out, or should I cancel the insurance plan and hope a tech doesn’t have to come out?) Also, is there a way to just raise hell and get out of this contract with them? It’s only been a month, but I’m already dealing with extremely ridiculous situations.

According to this article, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40841730/ns/business-consumerman/ DTV promises to fix their deceptive marketing tactics, treat customers fairly, etc.

stories like yours are abundant. chances are you placed your order with a DMS ,basically a telemarketer. they are notorious for making untrue statements and promises with no recourse from directv, IMO directv tolerates it because out of 1000 sales the telemarketer generates maybe 800 stick and 800 happy customers is better than none.read this article, it should help.http://www.ehow.com/how_5255105_cancel-reverse-early-cancellation-fee.html

  1. Find out who the local franchise authority is and contact them. Wouldn’t hurt to let them know your dealings with them will be advertised on this site for millions to see.
